National Fuel Economy Records Set in Mauritius - February 2010 Drivers: Helen and John Taylor and Naveen Kartick
An opportunity to set a 'benchmark' for the drivers of Mauritius to strive to beat.
We thank Shell Mauritius for making this happen. Records are made to be broken. With the good quality Fuel and Lubricants and smart Driving Techniques we encourage drivers to set their own Individual Records. They can also participate in future Fuel Economy Challenges organised by Shell Mauritius, and scrutinised by SGS.
The Island of Mauritius in all it's beauty is not a large area. The object of the exercise is to drive a specific route (which is 3 times around the Island's coastal road route) in less than 25 hours, under the rules set out by governing body SGS, using the least amount of fuel.
The drive was witnessed by SGS representative Mr. Ahmad Waligallah Sebrathy, who came on the entire drive with the Taylors and Naveen. He ensured the Fuel Tanks were filled to capacity, then sealed prior to the vehicles setting off. That all Traffic Act Laws were strictly adhered to, and he calculated the distance and the quantity of fuel used at the drive conclusion. For fairness and safety driving hours must be between 6am and 5pm, during daylight hours.
Helen and Naveen drove a VW Touareg V6 3 Litre Diesel Automatic 1104.2 kms over 24.29 hours and there was still 10.04 litres of Shell Diesel Extra left in the tank! An improvement of 37.46% above the car manufacturer's figures.
John and Naveen drove a Audi A3 Petrol Manual vehicle 1100.4 kms over 24.29 hours and there was still 9.21 litres of Shell Unleaded Extra left in the tank! An improvement of 47% above the car manufacturer's figures.
How did we approach the drive?
Anyone who has been to Mauritius would know to drive this route there are minimum straight roads. We were turning corners for the entire duration. There were many obstacles along the way including pedestrians, so complete concentration was paramount. Additionally, there seemed to be never ending 'speed humps'. We drove these at a reduced speed in the Auto and in a lower gear in the Manual vehicle. We kept the vehicles in motion and avoided unnecessary acceleration and braking.
We wish drivers wishing to attempt to break these records the Best of Luck! Please refer to Taylor's Tips for more Tips 'n Tricks.
MAURITIUS - June 2009
Following the success of the launch of the Shell Unleaded Extra last year the drivers in Mauritius have eagerly awaited the inception of Shell Diesel Extra with Fuel Economy Formula. Together with Shell Mauritius and an entourage of thirty vehicles of all shapes and sizes, with drivers of even more shapes and sizes, we put the fuel and the Fuel Save Tips to the test.
In Mauritius the education is not only about Fuel Economy, but SAFE Driving is a priority. The two go hand-in-hand. Through the media both these important topics have been highlighted and we thank them for supporting our cause. The Shell Fuel Save Challenge course was an interesting mix of city and country driving, and for us Aussies a scenic tour of a very beautiful island.
Impromptu radio interviews were conducted en route, capturing the honest feedback of the driver’s experience. The improvement in the driver’s fuel consumption figures ranged from 16% to 54.9% (based on the car manufacturer’s combined cycle).A presentation was made and prizes presented by the Mayor of Curepipe, who congratulated all the drivers on being responsible and setting a good
example in their communities.
A special mention to driver Naveen Kartick, who has continued his own individual Record Breaking, he now achieves 920 kms on every tank in his Nissan March.
Mauritius October 2008
It was with much enthusiasm we made our way for the launch of the Shell Unleaded Extra fuel into the Shell Mauritius market.Excited that we were at ‘the birth’ of this new fuel economy formula, and now part of the birthdays! Shell Mauritius proud to be the first African country to have available this amazing product. Clinics were rewarding and the on road test drives worked extremely well. We had two Motor Magazine writers going head to head on the road, neither one had seen their cars prior to driving and both drivers returned a very credible 40% plus improvement on the manufacturer’s L/100 Km figures. Demonstrating once more by using the right fuel, Shell Unleaded Extra and taking on board the FuelSave tips, it is possible for very driver to reduce their fuel consumption.
The star of the day Naveen Kartick, a Shell Mauritius employee, drove a car he had not driven before, during rush hour in Mauritius, with live radio interviews being broadcast from the back of his car every ten minutes. So a total of four people were in this car. Naveen had on road instruction from Helen and John Taylor. The excitement on Naveen’s face when it was announced he improved the manufacturer’s fuel economy figures by 30% was priceless….. Something the Taylors will never forget.
