July 1992
Now this is what you call innovative, enterprising, creative?
There are many superlatives that come to mind, but at the end of the day this project was an amazing, ‘out of the box’ idea, and the brainchild of John Taylor himself.
What was the Challenge?
To drive around Australia, (covering 14,500 kms), in a Land Rover Discovery Diesel, aiming to achieve a World Driving Record in Fuel Economy, for a 4 Wheel Drive vehicle.
To make it more difficult the Land Rover vehicle had to tow a trailer, containing the front door of a house………..a mobile Billboard. The house was to be built in RECORD time, for a house building record. Builders in Victoria hoped to erect a 21 square AVJennings Lakeside home, normally an 80 work day job, in just 27 days. The time of the year made it more treacherous for the builders being the month of July, one of Melbourne’s wettest months.
More than 76 construction workers were involved with the building project.
One of those people Gary Arrowsmith, an apprentice framer together with Reg Charles, put up the 185 square metre period style house frame in two days. “It was a lot of fun to chip in on a special project, something that was different”, said Gary.
John had to be back in time to deliver the last piece of the jigsaw to the 21 squareAVJennings home, the front door!Another twist - John Taylor and the official independent witness for the drive Colin Wallis, were given an ANZ Access Card, and they were forbidden to take a cent of cash with them on this gruelling trip. YES every transaction had to be processed through the card.
This proved to be a great success and they have video footage of each transaction as proof.
ALL THIS HAD TO START AND FINISH IN 27 DAYS !!! How could this be possible?
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
Onlookers, AVJennings representatives, suppliers and tradespeople working on the AVJennings Super Challenge, gathered for the official finish at the Overton Lea Estate in Sydenham Melbourne. The crowd raised their voices and cheered as John pulled up in the Land Rover Diesel vehicle and hung the front door to the newly created lakeside home.
Records were set!
AVJennings Housing Manager Mr. Charles Griffin said “the sponsorship was an excellent teaming as Mr. Taylor’s quest for ultimate motoring efficiency matched the AVJennings drive to build Australian dream homes at prices all Australian families can afford. Just as John didn’t waste one drop of fuel, you can see our tradespeople haven’t dropped any of their trademark quality to meet this exciting challenge”.
AVJennings confirmed that the interest generated by the challenge had drawn people to discover Overton Lea Estate Sydenham, and to be impressed with what it offered. “The momentum of new home buying interest built up by the Super Challenge has made Overton Lea the hottest property in the West”, Mr. Griffin said.
